The Elderly - A Distinctive Segment Of The American Population
admin - Mar - 7th

No longer seen as a minority, as a category of Americans, however the elderly do face social and economic disadvantages. But differ from blacks, Hispanics and women.

The elderly are a diverse category of people including men and women, all races and ethnicities, and members of every social class and from all walks of life.

In other words, they are unlikely to define themselves collectively as old people,
by hanging out flags, declaring their senior status. On the contrary, although aware of their age the elderly commonly think of themselves in other social categories.

A New Way Of Living Making The Transition To A Nursing Home
admin - Feb - 22nd

Nursing homes offer themselves in many economic climates and settings. And, in most cases are staffed with individuals that are dedicated to the well being of seniors
and their families.

The transition can be pleasant though it may be hard to imagine, even if you are moving
threshold to threshold, (hospital to nursing home).

Anger can be the order of the day with some residents. While some confide they feel rejected and cast aside when their families and physicians decided the move is best or perhaps the best for all involved.

Boomers Putting Retirement On Hold
admin - Feb - 13th

The word retirement takes on a whole new meaning when talking with the Baby Boomer generation. Bingo, shuffleboard, and golf every day are passé. They want to be busy, just not as busy. They want to stay involved, but not 60 hours a week involved. They want to continue earning, but without the stress and pressure of a traditional job.

Essentially, boomers have finally grown up. We have become working caregivers to our parents and children, and our concerns range from finances to relationships and health. Can you believe the drop-out generation currently sees itself as family-oriented? That the former protest-everything-generation now say they put others before themselves?

Travel Tips - Pick Your Destination
admin - Jan - 26th

Everyone travels at a different rate. What we mean by that is that some like to take it easy and calmly experience what they can while others want to see as much as they can in the shortest possible time and still others are after excitement and tons of adrenaline.

You need to be aware of the type of traveler you are and make sure you plan a holiday and choose travel companions who are of the same mind. Go to the wrong place with the wrong people and it will not be what you had hoped it would be. Can you imagine getting caught up in a white water rafting holiday down the Yukon River in mid-winter when all you wanted to do was see local native artifcats and take pictures for the bird-watching club back home?

Organic Solvent Exposure Linked To Birth Defects
admin - Jan - 23rd

While it is becoming more widely known that the exposure to organic solvents has been linked to health problems, such as kidney disease, liver damage, pulmonary disease, neurological disorders and various cancers, recent studies have shown a link between these solvents to birth defects and spontaneous abortions.

Organic solvents include aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene), aliphatic hydrocarbons (pentanes, hexanes, octanes), chlorinated derivatives (TCE, PCE, trichloroethylene) and glycol ethers (ethylene glycol, monoethyl ether). These solvents, used in various applications, including parts washing and degreasing, have been found to have significant correlations with birth defects, including microcephaly (an abnormally small head circumference), cleft palate, cardiovascular malformations, spina bifida and central nervous system defects. They have also been found to be factors in neurological diseases and multiple chemical sensitivities.

When Should A Baby Stop Using A Dummy?
admin - Dec - 26th

Many parents are anxious about their child using a dummy. Dummies have been criticised for their potential to damage baby teeth and many parents worry about their child being dependent on an object to sooth rather than learning to sooth themselves. But they can have some benefits too, say experts.

Past the age of two, dummies can begin to disrupt the alignment of secondary teeth. So experts advise against prolonged use. Also, studies have found that introducing dummies too early may interfere with breast-feeding. But dummies are not all bad.

Baby Boomers Ultimate Anti Aging Concepts: 5 Radical Tips
admin - Dec - 11th

Many of us “Baby Boomers” are each beginning to feel our age, and we’re starting to live it too. Every morning, clock radios everywhere announce the start of another day. As a typical boomer rolls out of bed, an old ache, pain, and/or little worry makes its presence known, just like the day before. The same beverage — coffee, tea, or maybe even caffeinated soda — is ingested in an attempt to energize the same tired face reflected in the morning mirror.

Baby Boomers - A Healthcare Crisis Nears
admin - Dec - 1st

Baby boomers are quickly approaching retirement age, and as they do, there are a number of concerns that need to be addressed, particularly in the area of healthcare. Unfortunately, there appears to be no easy answers to the healthcare problems that baby boomers, and the population in general, will face in the very near future.

Baby Boomers are people who were born between 1946 and 1964. During this period of time the United States of America saw an explosion in birthrates that had never been seen before and nothing like it has been seen since. Today, baby boomers make up approximately 28% of the total United States of America population.

Holistic Retirement Living - Reconnect With Your Spirit
admin - Nov - 28th

Holistic Retirement Living understands that retirement is a time for changing the way we honor our body and its relationship to our spirit. It reminds us that aging is a journey of faith in things unseen.

There are things we can do to affect our health and longevity, but this is only part of the story. No matter how well we exercise control over our physical health, we will always be participants in a grand plan taking us down a path that includes illness and decline, ultimately moving us into another form of consciousness. We do not, and never will, consciously control our fate. The sooner we admit this humbling fact, the better off we will be.
